Giandomenico Basso wins Transilvania Rally

Giandomenico Basso-Lorenzo Granai won the opening round of the 2017 TER - Tour European Rally, the Transilvania Rally in Cluj-Napoca. The BRC Racing Team driver, who was using the Hyundai New Generation i20 R5 for the first time, lost only briefly the lead to the Ford Fiesta R5 of Bogdan Marisca-Carmen Poenaru in the second and third stages of Friday. Basso was fastest on SS 4 to end the opening day in the lead, then set seven consecutive fastest stage times on Saturday, including the Power Stage whiere he picked up five bonus points, then managed a lead of over one minute on Marisca to the finish.


The belgian crew of Bernd Casier-Pieter Vyncke (Ford Fiesta R5) was fourth overall after day 1, just 0.1” behind the Škoda Fabia R5 of Dan Girtofan–Tudor Marza. Casier was third fastest on saturday's opening test to move ahead of his rival, then won two stages (and set five second fastest times) to finish third, only a few seconds behind Marisca.


Valentin Porcisteanu–Dan Dobre brought their Mitsubishi Evo IX home in fifth place, winning the TER Production Trophy. Luca Rossetti-Eleonora Mori claimed the TER 2WD Trophy in sixth overall, with their TOYOTA Motorsport GT86 CS-R3. Robert Woodside–Allan Harryman were seventh on their Heuvel-Motorsport Mitsubishi Evo X, ahead of Manuel Michalache-Alina Pop (Mitsubishi Evo IX), respectively second and third in the TER Production Trophy. The top ten was completed by Sorin Badea-Botond Csomortani (Hyundai New Generation i20 R5) and Adrian Raspopa-Cosmin Diacu (Citroën DS3 R3T).
