Ypres

Ypres is an historic city in the western part of Belgium, the so-called Westhoek.

A centre of intense battles during WW 1, the town was subsequently rebuilt with particular attention paid to the main square (including the town hall and cloth hall) which was kept as close as possible to the original design.

Today Ypres is an important historic city and a popular tourist destination, also featuring a number of industrial areas.
Places to see in Ypres include the central square with the Cloth Hall (home to the Flanders Fields museum, dedicated to Ypres's role in the war), built in the 13 century and formerly one of the largest commercial buildings of the Middle Ages.

The structure is the exact copy of the original, rebuilt after the war and designated in 1999 as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Close by, the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing commemorates those soldiers of the British Commonwealth who fell in the area during the First World War and who have no known grave, bearing the names of more than 54,000 officers and men.
